Before & After: Cozy Condo Project
This is my mothers home in St. George, Utah. She made the decision to downsize from her house to a condo in the summer of 2016. We got busy with the difficult and emotional task of sorting through and paring down her belongings, but after the tough stuff was done we had a lot of fun searching for just the right place. What we found was a condo in need of updating that had a floor plan she loved. I spent 6 weeks working hard to make the place exactly what she wanted and enjoying every minute of it! I was able to incorporate all of the things she loves and wasn't ready to part with , sprinkle in a few new goodies, and now she lives in a comfortable, personalized, and happy space.
Mom loves the beach so we did a subtle beach feel in her master bedroom, bathroom, and guest bath.
In her kitchen and t.v. room I used her much loved southwest decor but with a modern, updated twist. The condo didn't have a separate office space so I found a desk to use behind her sofa, painted it to match, and it worked out great.
The guest room is a fun, eclectic mix of colors and a showplace for the many mementos, pictures, and souvenirs from her years of travel. To accommodate her books and mementos I built in a bookcase in the room. I used three bookcases butted up against each other and finished it off with molding to give it a built in look.
By painting the existing outdoor furniture and adding colorful cushions and some of moms southwest artwork, the back patio is now a colorful place to enjoy the lovely St. George weather.
For this remodel I replaced the carpeting in the family room with wood laminate flooring. I painted most of the walls in the condo, and papered in the master bedroom. The budget didn't allow for new cabinets so I cleaned them up and added new granite and stainless appliances for an updated feel. It was a wonderful and rewarding experience to work with my mom in creating her cozy nest.
Here are the before and after pics from the remodel.
